The Light of Kotel is Upon Us-1
Metaphorically, a wall is a wall. But the KOTEL symbolizes much more. On my last trip to Israel, I was inspired to create a series of paintings using the Kotel as the center point. This exhibit is the result of that inspiration. I wanted my interpretation of this holy space to be different than the typical western wall paintings out there. I was aiming for a larger-than-life depiction, showing the kotel exaggerated in size, shape and color. I approached it ethereally, using historical references to frame my perspective, including that the Kotel is the last remnant of our Holy Temple, twice destroyed on the same time Tisha B’Av, on different years. The longing for the third temple engulfs all desires, understanding and wanting it in the people I meet and know in Israel. This yearning is also alluded to in the work.
